Camp Fletcher’s Outdoor Education program is an experiential learning opportunity for students to learn about our natural environment first-hand, beyond the confines of classroom walls. One Day field-trip adventures, on weekdays during the school-year, are offered to students in public, private and home schools.
Our curriculum has been specifically designed around Camp Fletcher’s indigenous trees, plants and wildlife — as well as the property’s creek and other natural resources.
All activities meet the common core standards required by the Alabama State Department of Education and can be tailored to meet the specific needs and grade level of your students (see flyer for more details).
Lesson Packages Include:
Environmental Science: Living & Non-Living, Plants, and Animals
Learn about all things living: Students will build critter hotels, explore the forest floor, build their own seed pots, and learn the basics of animal tracking!
Earth Science: Water, Wind, Earth, and Soil
Learn about the ways the Earth, Wind, and Water interact: Explore topics like erosion and the water cycle through activities like necklace building and edible aquifers.
Social Science: Alabama History, Geography, and Health.
Learn about Alabama history, geography, and health: Cultivate critical thinking skills and discover the life story of Camp Fletcher’s founder and Alabama’s first Black Registered Nurse, Pauline Fletcher! Students will walk our brand-new Historical Trail, enjoy a documentary screening of “Sailing, Not Drifting: The Story of Camp Fletcher,” and design their own campsites!

Program lessons are interactive, because student participation enhances academic outcomes and youth development. Field trips often include hikes, team-building activities and arts & crafts — all designed to foster students’ comfort in, and appreciation of, their natural surroundings and the rewards of working together.
